A September 2010 Pew Research Center study shows the best way to weather an economic storm is with higher education. The Pew Center study surveyed a representative sample of 2,967 Americans. Emerging from the recent economic downturn, here's what their research revealed:

  • 69% of Americans age 18-29 Lost Ground
  • 62% of adults with a high school diploma or less, Lost Ground
  • 60% who had completed at least a year of college, but did not earn a degree, Lost Ground
  • 58% of college graduates Held their Own during the economic downturn

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals similar findings about a college education and earning potential.

The Secret to Your Success

In 2009, average weekly earnings by level of education looked like this:

  • Less than a high school diploma: $454
  • High school diploma: $626
  • Some college, no degree: $699
  • Associate's degree: $761
  • Bachelor's degree: $1,025
  • Master's degree: $1,257
  • Professional degree: $1,529
  • Doctoral degree: $1,532
